Memorandum of Agreement 
               Between Calvin Bryan & John
               B. Stanley Witnesseth
1st Whereas John B. Stanley had this day loaned by
draft to Calvin Bryan by drafts On Boston & Ganby of Savannah 
Geo. in favor of Mannery Levit & Co., at sixty days after 
date dated Dec. 27th 1849 the Sum of five Hundred Dollars 
and the Said Calvin Bryan is desirous to Secure the Said 
Stanley for Said Loans and the Said Stanley is anxious 
to purchase two Negro Slaves of Said Bryan Named Doply 
& Charles each aged about Eleven years, and the said
parties have fixed a price on Said Negro Slaves of Six Hundred
Dollars to Wit Three Hundred Dollars Each now this agreement 
for the witnesseth that if the Said Calvin Bryan Shall 
fail to pay the Said amount of Five Hundred Dollars 
($500) to the Said Stanly at or before the time when 
Said draft becomes due to Wit Sixty Days from the 
date thereof then the Said Stanley Shall take in to his 
possession in the payments to Said Bryan or for the sum one 
Hundred Dollars and hold as his property absolutely
the Said Negro property So pledged and if the Said Bryan 
does pay the Said Amount to the Said Stanley aforesaid 
then the Said Stanley relinquishes all claims to the Said Negro 
property  above described and pledged as aforesaid
     In Witness Whereof the parties hereto have 
Signed and Sealed this agreement, this 27th day of 
                           December 1849

Alachua County          Personally appeared before me the 
undersigned Clerk of the Circuit Court for the Counties 
of Alachua & Levy James A. Peden who being duly Sworn 
according to Law says  that he Saw the above named parties 
execute the Same for the purpose therein expressed 
and that he Signed this Same as a witness
