Special Term A.D. 1891
Monday January 26th 1891 -
Death having invaded our Circle and stricken down the Honorable
Jesse H. Goss a distinguished member of this Bar we are again
arrested amidst the scenes of professional Conflict to
Contemplate the ways of God to man. The impressive
lesson of the uncertainty of life and that all of us
must sooner or later yield to the demand of the
inexorable will is now again presented for our Consideration
Shall we profit by it or shall it after the sod has
Covered all that remains of our lamented Brother
pass away without leaving a trace of the impressions
it cannot have failed to produced -
The deceased was a native of Georgia and at the
time of his death which occurred in this City on the
14th day of June 1890 was sixty years of Age
He graduated at Yale College with honors and for a
few years engaged in the practice of his Chosen profess-
sion in his native state. But at an early age he
cast his lot in the State of Florida as his adopted
home, He was a member of the Constitutional
Convention of this State in 1868, where he was noted
for his ability and Conservatism. In 1869 recognizing
his ability and learning as a lawyer the Governor of the
State of Florida appointed him Judge of this Circuit
The duties of his Judicial station were discharged with
assiduity impartiallity and ability. He Served as a Judicial
officer for Eight years and after the expiration of his
term of office he again resumed the practice of
Law. He came to the Bar with the enlarged experience
his judicial Career has enabled him to acquire - He
was Courtious and affable to his brother members of the
Bar and was universally respected and esteemed by them
Again in 1888 he was nominated by the Republican
party of this State for Judge of the Supreme Court
but was not elected On the 14th of June 1890 he
was almost without warning suddenly Stricken by
the hand of death and in a few hours passed from this
tenement of Clay -
The members of this Bar record with Satisfaction
in the solemnity of the occasion; that no stain of
dishonor rests on his professional or private Character
and point to his Carrer as an example for the imitation
of those who are to follow the honorable profession
which he adorned with his life and Conduct
