       escape Shall suffer a penalty of the amount of the fine
       and costs of each escapted convict,
Rule 4 The Guard Shall obey and See that all Rules of the
       Board of County Commissioners are strictly obeyed
Rule 5 The Guard Shal at thirty minuets past Six o'clock
       AM of each day (except Sunday) march the con-
       victs to the place of work designated By the Board
       of County Commissioners and on arrival there Shall
       place the Convicts and keep them at constant labor
       as may be directed by the Board
Rule 6 The Hours of labor shall be from 7 o'clock AM
       to 12 M, and from 1 PM to 6 o'clock P.M. or till
       Such hour as will enable the guard to place the
       convicts in jail before dark
Rule 7 The convicts will be made to work diligently upon
       Such work as may be directed by the County Commission-
       ers or by their authority; and the Guard Shall be respon-
       sible for all loss and damage to tools, material &c
       except the usual wear and tear.
Rule 8 The prisoners will be Marched in single file, close order,
       or in such manner as the Guard may deem most
       condusive to their Safety. They will not be permitted to
       Speak to each other or to the Guard, unless to ask for
       information in regard to their work, and then only
       in the briefest language and in a respectful manner.
       They will not look at or speak to or gaze at any
       visitor unless it be in the presence of and with
       the permission of a Member of the Board of County
       Commissioners, and no convict will in any case,
       be permitted to buy, Sell or trade with any officer,
       member of the Guard or visitor.
Rule 9 The Guard will not use abusive or profane langu-
       age to prisoners but if a prisoner disobeys an order
       or violates any of these rules or the rules of the pris-
       on, the fact will be reported to the Sheriff by whom
       action will be taken in the case. The Guard will
       not Speak to any convict unless to give necessary
       orders. Nor will they pass familiar looks, or hold
       any intercourse whatever with the prisoners.
Rule 10The violation of any of the rules by any prisoner
       or the failure or refusal to obey the order of the
       Sheriff or to obey the order of the Deputy Sheriff
       Shall be punished by Such lawful means as the
